چکیده

In past several decades, extensive research has been performed regarding the possibilities of using renewable resources for the production of chemicals and fuels instead of fossil resources, which will eventually become rare and therefore expensive. Increasing the use of materials based on renewable resources for packaging and other applications not only holds significant advantages in economics and security, but also promises improvements regarding long-term sustainability. The growing problems of disposal, especially in countries with dense populations such as Europe and Japan, as well as low acceptance of incineration require alternative routes to reduce the amount of plastic material in society's waste stream. In addition, the production of polymeric materials based on fossil fuels produces CO2 and contributes to global warming. Biodegradable macromolecules based on renewable resources are a possible answer to these issues.

Rheological Techniques for Determining Degradation of Polylactic Acid in Bioresorbable Medical Polymer Systems

A method developed in the 1980s for the conversion of linear rheological data to molar mass distribution is revisited in the context of degradable polymers. The method is first applied using linear rheology for a linear polystyrene, for which all conversion parameters are known. A proof of principle is then carried out on four polycarbonate grades. Finally, preliminary results are shown on degr...

Phase transitions during membrane formation of polylactides. I. A morphological study of membranes obtained from the system polylactide-chloroform-methanol

The influence of solid-liquid demixing, liquid-liquid demixing and vitrification on the morphology of polylactide membranes has been investigated. To study the effects of crystallization of polylactides on the membrane formation and morphology, polylactides of varying stereoregularity were used. The polymers applied were poly-L-lactide (PLLA) and copolymers with different molar ratios of L-lact...

Examining the Relationship between “Science” and “Religion” in Socio-Cultural Context of the Renaissance: A Kuhnian Reading of Bacon’s New Atlantis

Thomas Kuhn’s model of paradigm shift as an intra-systemic framework to account for changes within the scientific discourse has been adopted by scholars in different fields as diverse as sociology, theology, economy, and education, to name only a few. The present study argues that the same model can usefully be drawn upon to examine the relationship between ‘science’ and ‘religion’ with some re...

Fabrication of Polymer Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering

A new approach to the fabrication of individual implants and scaffolds for tissue engineering—surface selective laser sintering (SSLS)—is proposed and realized. In contrast to the conventional selective laser sintering, the SSLS method makes it possible to sinter polymer microparticles and melt the near-surface layer rather than the microparticle as a whole. The effect of the laser radiation pa...
